On Highway 10, thirty miles east of Indio, the Chiriaco grade and pass are trouble spots for local travelers and truckers. The pass is lengthy and subject to high winds. Winds cause problems for trucks, as they swerve in and out of their travel lane and cause other motorists to have to avoid them.

The road surface is well maintained, but frequently trucks are traveling well in excess of the speed limit. In both directions, it is not unusual to see large lines of trucks traveling in excess of 65 mph. Leaving Los Angeles, as they embark on their cross-country delivery, the grade is gradual, but with today’s semi-trucks, the grade does not slow these behemoths. Traveling back to Los Angeles, a truck often picks up speed over the 10 mile down grade and the trucker is anxious to complete his or her trip. These conditions make it ripe for accidents. This in one of the reasons that the CHP has ordered special patrol of the area, due to the significant and devastating accidents that occur on this passageway.

The bureau of Statistics found that a traveler was more than twice as likely to die as a result of an accident on the Chiriaco Summit than in other accidents in the County of Riverside.
